Entertainment and publishing giants gathered in New York City on October 11 for the first Quill Awards, honoring excellence in writing and publishing. The publishing world’s people’s choice awards are sponsored by Reed Business Information, parent company of School Library Journal, and NBC Universal Television Stations.

Book of the Year

Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince (Scholastic/Arthur A. Levine Books), J. K. Rowling

Children’s Illustrated Book

Runny Babbit: A Billy Sook (HarperCollins), Shel Silverstein

Young Adult/Teen

Girls in Pants: The Third Summer of the Sisterhood (Delacorte), Ann Brashares

Graphic Novel

Marvel 1602 Volume I (Marvel Comics), Neil Gaiman, Andy Kubert, and Richard Isanove

 

National Book Award Nominees

Twenty finalists for the 2005 National Book Awards were announced October 12 in Oxford, MS, and a benefit ceremony honoring the winners will take place November 16 in New York City. The finalists for the National Book Award for Young People’s Literature are:

  • The Penderwicks (Knopf), Jeanne Birdsall
  • Where I Want to Be (Putnam), Adele Griffin
  • Inexcusable (Atheneum), Chris Lynch
  • Autobiography of My Dead Brother (HarperTempest), Walter Dean Myers
  • Each Little Bird That Sings (Harcourt), Deborah Wiles
