ReadWriteThink

By Staff -- School Library Journal, 11/1/2005

www.readwritethink.org

The nonprofit Web site ReadWriteThink provides free lessons plans, interactive student materials, and Web resources, all based on English language arts (ELA) standards devised by site cosponsors the International Reading Association (IRA) and the National Council of Teachers of English.

The popular site—registering 15 million hits in August 2005—currently offers about 450 lessons and about 10 to 15 new ones are posted each month. Searchable by grade band (K–2, 3–5, 6–8, 9–12), all ReadWriteThink lessons align with national ELA standards and involve the use of technology, either by the teacher or the learner. Related assessments are included, along with any handouts, classroom-approved Web sites, and the research behind a given teaching strategy, providing teachers with complete, self-contained lessons, from theory to practice. Written by experienced teachers, every ReadWriteThink lesson goes through a rigorous peer-review process, and dozens of lessons are rejected each year, according to an IRA representative. Educators interested in writing or reviewing lessons for the site are encouraged to complete the “Join Us” form.
