Picturing the Provensens

If you’re in Amherst, MA, stop by the Eric Carle Museum of Picture Book Art to see the works of award-winning artists Alice and Martin Provensen. In the 43 years they worked together, the Provensens illustrated 51 books, including some of the beloved Golden Book favorites and the Caldecott-winning picture book The Glorious Flight: Across the Channel with Louis Bleriot, July 25, 1909 (Viking, 1983) (above). The exhibit, which showcases how years of working so closely together made their styles indistinguishable, features the artists’ whimsical and vibrant illustrations and runs until March 12, 2006.

'Narnia’ Read-a-Likes

With so many kids flocking to see The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe, librarians can now turn to a handy list of books to complement the blockbuster flick. The Booklist Taskforce of the Young Adult Library Services Association has compiled more than 60 individual titles and series for those kids aching to read something similar to C. S. Lewis’s classic tale about the land of Narnia that exists beyond the back of a wardrobe. Titles include Inkheart (Scholastic, 2003) by Cornelia Funke and The Phantom Tollbooth (Random, 1961) by Norton Juster. Visit www.ala.org/ala/yalsa/NarniaReadAlikes.pdf for the entire list.
