Gr 5-8–In the sequel to The Secret of the Alchemist (Aug. 2005, p. 63), John Ward continues the adventures of Helen and Jake, two Scottish high school students who are on a quest to discover the life eternal power of the Philosopher's Stone, an ancient crystal. The intrepid teenagers travel from London to Paris to Istanbul in search of Stone and machine (the Bronze Basilisk) used by ancient and medieval alchemists to prolong life. Filled with intriguing villains such as Dr. Negulescu, Draganu, and Macintosh Raeburn, Ward's tale of the supernatural hooks readers from the beginning to the surprise ending. Australian actor Colin Moody expertly provides the voices for a cavalcade of characters; his excellent narration never flags. Young adults who enjoy fantasy and adventure stories will enjoy this series and eagerly await the final volume in the trilogy. A must have for all young adult collections.
