Welcome Relief
-- School Library Journal, 8/1/2006
On June 26, Dollar General CEO David Perdue announced the first grant recipients of “Beyond Words: The Dollar General School Library Relief Fund.” Grants totaling over $230,000 were made to 32 school libraries in Louisiana, Mississippi, and Texas. The announcement was made at New Orleans’ Benjamin Franklin High School, which received a $10,000 grant. “This library has always been a center of learning for our students,” said Idella Washington, the school’s media specialist. “With this grant I can bring my library fully back for the next school term.”
Dollar General, in collaboration with the American Library Association, the American Association of School Librarians, and the National Education Association, is sponsoring the fund for public school libraries whose programs have been affected by a disaster. Grants are to replace or supplement books, media, and/or library equipment in the library. For more information, visit www.ala.org/aasl/disasterrelief.
