School librarians don’t often sit down with elected officials to talk about the impact of their work on student achievement. But on October 3, New York media specialists did just that.
At a daylong event, sponsored by the New York Library Association (NYLA) and Scholastic Library Publishing, state librarian Janet Welch gave an overview of New York’s school libraries; Rutgers University’s Ross Todd held a presentation on school library research; and Barbara Stripling, director of library services for New York City, provided a case study on innovative practices.
“This was an opportunity to focus state and local policymakers’ attention on the proper funding and staffing needs of school libraries,” says Michael Borges, NYLA’s executive director.
