I am compelled to write to you in reaction to your January 2007 cover. I simply found it offensive in many ways. The librarian caricature’s clothing, exposing her midriff, violates many dress codes. I suppose the super-librarian was adorned in this manner so we could see the pierced belly button and tattoo.
Is this the “new me” that I should aspire to be? If so, it would require me to change genders. I am all for representing our profession in the spirit of being superhuman, but it would be nice to see this done in a professional manner.—Will Haines, librarian, Athena Middle School Rochester, NY
Dress Code Violation!
What in the heck do you think you’re trying to do to school librarians? When I looked at the picture of the “librarian” you have flying across the cover, I was appalled and offended! Dolly Parton boobs and bare bellies with navel rings are NOT the images I want my students to remember me for! Do I want to be hip and modern? YES! But not in THAT way! We don’t let our students come to school in that manner, so what makes you think there’s a school librarian in the country who will?—Kristie A. Hart, librarian, Hollidaysburg Area Sr. High School, PA
