By SLJ Staff -- School Library Journal, 3/21/2007
Hey, Bryan Collier fans, the award-winning author and illustrator of Uptown (2000), Rosa (2005, both Holt), and Martin’s Big Words (Jump at the Sun, 2001), will be the featured guest for the 21st annual A(ugusta) Baker’s Dozen: A Celebration of Stories on April 20-21 at the Richland County Public Library in Columbia, SC.
A painter since the age of 15, in 2000, Collier won both the Coretta Scott King Award for Illustration and the Ezra Jack Keats New Illustrator Award for Uptown, his first book. Since then, the awards have kept coming in. Rosa and Martin’s Big Words were designated Caldecott Medal Honors, and three Coretta Scott King honors went to Martin’s Big Words, Freedom River (Jump at the Sun, 2000), and Visiting Langston (Holt, 2002)
Collier’s visit will include a lecture and book signing at 6:30 p.m. on Friday, April 20 and Storytelling for Families from 11 a.m to 2 p.m. on Saturday, April 21 at the Main Library in downtown Columbia.
The two-day festival, sponsored by the library and the University of South Carolina's School of Library and Information Science, honors author and storyteller Augusta Baker and continues her legacy of inspiring others to introduce children to literature and stories.
