Congratulations to Kahani
By Staff -- Curriculum Connections, 4/1/2007
Kahani, an upstart literary magazine which derives its name from the Hindi word for story, was recently awarded a Distinguished Achievement Award by the Association of Educational Publishers as well as a Multicultural Children’s Publication Award by the National Association for Multicultural Education. The magazine, for children of South Asian descent, ages 6 to 11, began publication in 2004 when cofounders Monika Jain and Leena Chawla realized that there was a cultural gap between mainstream magazine content and their own children’s lives. They sought to fill that void with this enriching, empowering, and entertaining publication that brings together contemporary life experiences with original storytelling, recipes, and lessons in linguistics.
The 28-page glossy is filled with short stories, biographies, book reviews, and interactive articles covering math, science, and other topics, and illustrated with vibrant artwork. Contributors include published as well as emerging South Asian writers and artists. The magazine welcomes reader participation and recently wrapped up its Second Annual Young Writers Contest. The winning entries will be published in the spring 2007 issue. Subscription rates are $20 for a year and $35 for two years. Log on to www.kahani.com for more information.
