Mark Your Calendars

The Children's Book Council (CBC) has turned its 2008 calendar upside down. This year, the organization will hold Children's Book Week in May, instead of in November, when the annual celebration has traditionally taken place.
May is “the perfect time to be reminding people of the importance of children's books,” says Michelle Bayuk, CBC's marketing director. Although Children's Book Week has been popular with booksellers and librarians, CBC hopes to create a new “national focus” on the week-long celebration, which introduces young people to new authors and ideas in schools, libraries, homes, and bookstores. Next May will feature a “gala event,” presenting awards to authors of books in three age categories based on the annual Children's Choices List. The CBC moved the event to May, following conversations with publishers, booksellers, and librarians, says Bayuk.
