Originally written in Italian, this book explores the child’s developing mind in order to help parents raise flexible, critical thinkers. A follower of Israeli psychologist Reuven Feuerstein, himself a student of Jean Piaget, the author focuses on how to develop children’s memory, logic, language, and symbolic thought. The first thing parents should do is to abandon all prejudices that they may have and encourage children to try new things, allowing them to make mistakes so that they can learn from them. Parents should be consistent, set limits, and be specific when assigning tasks. The author also offers a detailed account of mental development at different ages, providing examples of effective parent-child communication for each stage, and suggests games that develop critical thinking skills and vocabulary. This book will appeal to educated parents and caregivers who want in-depth knowledge of their children’s mental and emotional development. A good choice for parenting and education collections in large public libraries.
