Webware 100
By Kathy Ishizuka -- School Library Journal, 6/1/2008
So many 2.0 tools, so little time. Those free, Web-based programs enhance productivity (think Zoho), provide quick access to data (as in Google Maps), and connect us with others (the mighty Facebook), but they’re also poppin’ up like toast. How does one keep up?
Webware, a popular blog dedicated to 2.0 applications, is a good place to start. In addition to the latest news and recommendations by chief blogger Rafe Needleman, a CNET editor, there’s the Webware 100. Highly anticipated by serious two-oh heads and not so fanatical users alike, this annual list represents the 100 top Web applications, as chosen by popular vote.
More than 1.9 million votes were cast to decide the 2008 list. The big names, such as Firefox, iTunes, and YouTube, garnered the lion’s share of votes, but fans also tapped some less familiar choices. Maxthon, a browser that’s popular in China, was among the winners, along with commerce site Woot. RemembertheMilk, an online to-do list, and email assistant I Want Sandy won in the productivity category.
