Marcus Garvey, born August 17, 1887, was one of the most fascinating and controversial African Americans living in the early 20th century. In his youth he was angered by the exploitation of black workers and, as a result, established the Universal Negro Improvement Association (U.N.I.A.). Its goals were racial unity, economic independence, educational achievement, and moral reform. Although this site is focused around the PBS documentary, there is plenty to learn without viewing the film. Of special note is the “Teacher’s Guide,” which includes some great learning activities.
