SLJ talks to country music legend Reba McEntire about her collaboration with the PBS series Reading Rockets.
McEntire will host “Toddling Toward Reading,” the newest episode of the Reading Rockets: Launching Young Readers series. The show, which airs this fall, will focus on how to make the make the most of the years before a child starts school.
How did you become involved with the issue of literacy?
I love books and reading. Having to travel as much as I do, a book totally keeps me entertained. Also, I come from a family of teachers. Years ago, First Book approached me about helping them with their mission to provide children with their own books. I knew what a difference books had made in my life, so I jumped at the chance to spread this message. Through First Book, I’ve seen firsthand how a book can change a child’s life.
What do you think is the biggest misunderstanding people have about reading?
Maybe that it is boring. I believe reading is the most exciting thing in the world. It can take you to places and on adventures beyond your imagination. It’s magical!
What do you hope people will take away from "Toddling Toward Reading?"
It’s never too early to start to teach a child the love of books!
Anything else you'd like to add on the topic of literacy and reading?
Reading is a lifelong journey that can take you anywhere and everywhere. Helping your child enter that world is the greatest gift.
