Selected Resources from TeachingBooks.net

Nick Glass, TeachingBooks.net for Curriculum Connections -- School Library Journal, 10/7/2008

This column is devoted to introducing book-related online resources and sharing strategies for using these materials in the classroom. This month, I thought I would share something a little different, a video that had an impact on my thoughts about education and puts the work we do into a larger context.

Watch Dalton Sherman's keynote address

I was awestruck as I watched fifth-grader Dalton Sherman give this rallying keynote address welcoming 17,000 teachers back to school in the Dallas Independent School District. Yes, a 10-year-old gave the convocation speech at the American Airlines Center in August, and received a standing ovation. This video runs about five minutes; I hope you find time to watch it. It’s unlike anything I have ever seen before.

After viewing the film, please use the feedback box below to share your response, or email me. I would be interested to learn about your reaction.

PS: If you want to know more about Dalton Sherman, read the Dallas Morning News article online. It explains how this 10-year-old was selected to give this speech, how he prepared, and his current aspirations.
