Chef Bill Telepan Teaches NYC Kids About Good Food

By SLJ Staff -- School Library Journal, 10/8/2008

More than 2,000 NYC kids will take part in this year's Days of Taste program.

Celebrity Chef Bill Telepan takes on more than 2,000 New York City public school kids this month as part of a national program that teaches inner-city children about the importance of fresh food and how ingredients weave their way through daily life, from farm to table.

The annual AIWF/NY Days of Taste program, presented by the American Institute of Wine & Food and administered in New York City by Spoons Across America, teams up volunteer chefs, food professionals, farmers, and teachers to guide elementary school children through a four-week curriculum that highlights the exploration of food and nutrition.

Children will have the opportunity to discuss, savor, and compare different taste sensations and flavors from locally grown foods, visit a Greenmarket, enjoy a hands-on experience with the preparation of a harvest salad, and a take a trip to Telepan’s restaurant for a behind-the-scenes tour and lunch.

“I am proud to be involved with the Days of Taste program and to volunteer along with hundreds of other New Yorkers to share the importance of healthy eating with school children,” says Telepan. This year’s fourth and fifth grade participants hail from 70 classrooms in 22 schools throughout the five boroughs of New York City.

Some 63 restaurants—including the famed Chanterelle, Gramercy Tavern, and the Waverly Inn—28 food professionals, and 52 culinary students throughout the area have volunteered for the program.

Days of Taste is a national program serving more than 10,000 elementary school children across the country.
