National Film Festival for Talented Youth (NFFTY) Lineup Announced
Dodie Ownes -- School Library Journal, 4/1/2009
This year’s NFFTY jury has selected 113 films from more than 400 submissions to be shown in themed programs at the 2009 festival in Seattle, April 24–26. In order to qualify, filmmakers must be age 22 or under. The youngest filmmaker this year was seven-year-old Emily Salva, who’s also the youngest participant to ever be featured at a NFFTY festival in its three-year history.A wide array of feature-length and short films in narrative, documentary, animation, music video, experimental, and international categories by young filmmakers from around the country and the world will be presented at this year’s festival. Due to a large number of international submissions, NFFTY created an international category to showcase the talents of young filmmakers from outside the United States, including those from Australia, Canada, China, France, Mexico, the Netherlands, and Singapore.
NFFTY will also feature four panels of film industry experts that are open to attendees. Sessions include “What’s Left to SAY? The Social Value of Filmmaking” and “The Sound of the Story—The Power of Music in Film.”
NFFTY Awards will be announced on Sunday, April 26. Prizes for filmmakers 18 years old and younger include an all-expense-paid trip to Los Angeles to meet with creative executives and agents and a full scholarship to attend TheFilmSchool’s summer program.
A three-day VIP festival pass is $65, and gives attendees access to 100 films, plus panels and special events. For more information, visit NFFTY’s Web site.
