Editor's NoteVery few details on the Kindle DX college campus pilot program were available at the time of the device's unveiling last week. Since the press conference, Amazon has revealed that only 300 Kindles will be tested at the seven participating schools (Arizona State, Case Western Reserve, Princeton, Pace, Reed, and the Darden School of Business at the University of Virginia). Shedding a little more light on its participation, The Office of Information Technology at Princeton has put up an "e-reader Pilot Program" site, which includes a brief but useful FAQ.
On the research university budget front, Harvard has put up a page detailing some of the measures its libraries are taking to cope with their share of cuts from a 22% drop in the institution's endowment since June. Among the cuts: subscriptions to more than 800 print journals that duplicate those available online. Finally, as academic life heads back toward business as usual following the most recent finals period, Newswire columnists Steven Bell and Barbara Fister each give their take on the library as a hallowed place on college campuses.
