The Magic That is Coldplay

-- School Library Journal, 5/20/2009

Coldplay is an alternate rock band from London that was formed in 1998 by Chris Martin (vocalist), Jonny Buckland (guitarist), Guy Berryman (bassist), and Will Champion (drummer). Its albums consist of Parachutes (2000), A Rush of Blood to the Head (2002), X & Y (2005), and their most recent, Viva la Vida (2008). Hit singles include Yellow, The Scientists, Clocks, Speed of Sound, Fix You, and the title track, Viva la Vida. The group has won many awards, such as Mercury award, NME’s album of the year, and several Grammy nominations for Viva la Vida.

Viva la Vida features only 10 songs. My two favorites are Viva la Vida and Cemeteries of London. Viva la Vida brings the listener back in time to Renaissance Italy during the 1500s. The song tells the tale of a king who abused his power and is now living as a pauper in exile. Cemeteries in London takes you to the ancient streets of London, which are full of ghosts, witches, and dark magic. The song carries you on a trip of excited fear.

This CD possesses a powerful aura, with violins and unique use of the acoustic and electric guitar. If you like powerful songs that take you back to a time before you were born, and are full of kings and queens and royal castles, then this CD is for you. So take a trip back to the past, and experience the magic that is Coldplay! (Capitol Records. Music # 509992-16886-0-7)—Samantha K., Gr 12, Floral Park (NY) Memorial High School
