Editor's Note

Yesterday, ten university press directors signed a statement supporting "free access to scientific, technical, and medical journal articles no later than 12 months after publication." The move "puts them at odds with the official stance of the Association of American University Presses," according to the Chronicle of Higher Education's News Blog. But it also puts these smaller presses in an ideological camp along with the small but growing number of university faculties that have formally endorsed Open Access principles, as well as many of their librarian counterparts on campus.

An interesting story is emerging from Texas about who knew what when as the plans were developed for the George W. Bush presidential library at Southern Methodist University, Dallas. A judge has ordered the former president to give a deposition under oath in the case, potentially the first time a "sitting or former president ever has been forced to testify in a state court proceeding," reports the AP. Bush's lawyers and the university say the former president had no knowledge of the library plan.

On June 9, LJ is hosting a webcast called Data for a Downturn Economy, sponsored by LexisNexis. If you're interested in boning up on statistical literacy with LexisNexis' Statistical DataSets, check it out.

Finally, I'm pleased to announce that Ellyssa Kroski will be starting next week as our third columnist, writing monthly with her take on technology in academic libraries. Until then, enjoy the Newswire, and keep us posted.—Josh Hadro, Editor, Academic Newswire
