Join Celebrities, Communities in the “What Book Got You Hooked” Campaign

By SLJ Staff -- School Library Journal, 8/10/2009 2:00:00 PM

What book left a lasting impression on you as a kid? For actor Morgan Freeman, it was Anna Sewell’s Black Beauty. For singer Patti LaBelle, it was Johanna Spyri’s Heidi, and for Newbery-award-winning author Kate DiCamillo, it was Margaret Mitchell’s Gone With the Wind.

These and about 80 other authors, journalists, actors, artists, and librarians are taking part in “What Book Got You Hooked?,” a campaign by the nonprofit organization, First Book.

The goal? To bring thousands of new books to children across the country who would otherwise have no access to them.

First Book is also asking readers everywhere to take part in the campaign by sharing

what book made reading fun for them. Participants have until September 30 to help get more kids hooked on reading by voting for one state that will receive 50,000 new books for low-income youth.

Librarians, educators, and their students are encouraged help their own state win by spreading the word and asking those in their communities to vote.

“Sending an email to your network, featuring the campaign on your Web site, or mentioning the campaign in your blog or newsletter can make a world of difference for the children we serve,” says Joan Sahlgren, First Book's vice president of communications.

The winning book will be announced online shortly after the voting closes on September 30 and later at a celebratory event in the winning state.

Visit the “What Book Got You Hooked” Web site to cast your vote—and to find out what books got Stephen Colbert, Barry Manilow, Judy Blume, Scarlett Johansson, Mo Willems, Eric Carle, and others hooked on reading.
