"One summer morning as butterflies flitted between the zinnias, Epossumondas and his mama were sipping sweet tea and chitchatting about this and that."
A year ago September, the children’s literature community mourned the loss of the remarkable Coleen Salley. A native Louisianan, Ms. Salley was known for her spirited storytelling, in front of an audience and on the page. Her folksy signature tales concerned the little possum “patootie,” who had trouble making heads or tails of his mama’s requests. This month Harcourt is publishing Salley’s Eppossumandas Plays Possum, illustrated with mixed-media art by Janet Stevens.
"Without a thought of what Mama had said, Epossumondas ran after that butterfly."
In this story Epossumandas ignores Mama's warnings about wandering off into the swamp where and it's easy to get lost on paths that go every "which-a-way," and where the lou-garou is waiting to snatch up small possums. Here are images from that book featuring a Mama who's the image of Coleen Salley.
