October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. This well-written, age-appropriate Web article explains to teen girls why they need to start examining their breasts, teaches them how to properly perform a self-exam, and explains, in a very reassuring way, the warning signs to be aware of. Although breast cancer is rare in teens and women in their twenties, some young women—especially those with a family history of breast cancer—are at risk.
The article, also available in Spanish, contains a useful list of related topics (such as breast soreness) at the bottom of each page, as well as “Additional Resources” with links to other appropriate Web sites about breast cancer and breast development.
One of the most important things every woman can do to help defeat breast cancer is perform a monthly self- exam. Early detection and treatment is crucial, so don’t be shy about sharing this article with teen girls and their parents—if we each do something as simple as this, think of the impact we can have!
