You know how we raffle off subscriptions at conferences?
Do you wonder if anyone actually wins? Well, they do. And at the recent Public Library Association conference, Amy Waters from Glen Ellyn, IL; Laurie Lieggi from Newberg, OR; and Columbus, OH’s Jennifer Neruda all won free subscriptions to SLJ. Congrats!

Art Teachers Bring 21st-Century Vision to 2010 Conference
Art teachers face a tsunami of budget cuts, despite playing a key role in the development of 21st century skills—sound familiar? I was fortunate enough to attend the annual conference of the National Art Education Association, held April 14–18 in Baltimore, MD. There I was able to meet some of the more than 4,000 art teachers who attended the event to consider this year’s theme: Art Education and Social Justice. Many of their conversations linked perfectly with the aims and concerns of school librarians. Art teachers play a critical role in producing learners who can think flexibly, communicate visually, and become leaders in design and invention. Who better to work closely with as we advocate and practice teaching that matters? more » » »

School Libraries to Benefit from Race to the Top Awards
School libraries are expected to reap some reward from both Tennessee and Delaware’s wins in the recently announced federal Race to the Top awards.
With Delaware expecting about $100 million, the state will distribute 50 percent to its 19 school districts and 18 charter schools, with libraries—while not spelled out specifically in Delaware’s application—likely to play a significant role in the way schools spend their funds. more » » »
Natalie Merchant, Ghost Ghost: Setting Poems to Music
Natalie Merchant and the Brooklyn indie band Ghost Ghost have each made a musical contribution to National Poetry Month that may also help teachers and librarians expose their students to poets and their poems.
Merchant, who was lead singer in the alternative rock band 10,000 Maniacs before going solo in 1993, released her latest album “Leave Your Sleep” (Nonesuch, 2010) on April 13th. The 26-track album is based on a collection of songs adapted from poems by Jack Prelutsky, Edward Lear, Ogden Nash, e.e. cummings, and Robert Louis Stevenson, and is inspired by Merchant’s desire to expose her young daughter to complex poetry. The singer/songwriter says poetry has a larger and more vivid life when it’s set to music. more » » »

Iron Man 2
Iron Man 2 (PG-13), a live-action movie from Marvel Studios and Paramount Pictures based on the Marvel Comics character, jet-boots into theaters on May 7, 2010. This sequel to the box-office hit Iron Man (2008) is also directed by Jon Favreau, with Robert Downey Jr. reprising his role as Tony Stark—billionaire industrialist, brilliant inventor, consummate playboy, and the eponymous superhero. This time around, the world knows that Stark is Iron Man, and the pressure is mounting—from the press, the public, and the government—for him to share his technology with the military. more » » »
