The 2001 Orbis Pictus Award for outstanding nonfiction for children went to Jerry Stanley for his book Hurry Freedom: African Americans in Gold Rush California (Crown, 2000). The award is given by the National Council of Teachers of English.
The 2001 Jo Osborne Award for Humor in Children's Literature was given to Rosemary Wells, author of Noisy Nora (Penguin Putnam, 2000), Max's Chocolate Chicken (Penguin Putnam, 2000), Bunny Money(Penguin USA, 1997),and Emily's First 100 Days of School (Hyperion, 1999).The Ohio Library Foundation established the award to recognize authors and illustrators whose humor is delivered with heart. It honors the memory of Jo Osborne, for 17 years a children's librarian at Worthington (OH) Public Library.
2001 Alaskan School Librarian of the Year went to Sue Hagedorn of Gladys Wood Elementary School in Anchorage and Linda Thibodeau of Juneau-Douglas High School in Juneau. The award is presented by the Alaska Association of School Librarians. The association also presented the Linda K. Barrett Service Award to Bob VanDerWege from Soldotna Elementary School in Soldotna. The Barrett award is given to an individual who has demonstrated an ongoing commitment to the development of excellence in school libraries.
The Reginal Medal for outstanding contributions to children's literature was presented this year by the Catholic Library Association to writer E. L. Konigsburg.
