Who thinks that librarians play an important role in the community? The New York Times does, and it's ready to put its money where its mind is. The Times has created two annual awards to honor librarians: the New York Times Librarian Award and the New York Times Library Service Award. The Librarian Award enables librarians to nominate colleagues who have provided outstanding service on a regular basis, and the Library Service Award encourages users of New York City's public library system to nominate their favorite librarians. The two winners will be announced in the Times in September, as part of the newspaper's 150th anniversary celebration. Each winner will receive $2,500 and a plaque. The deadline for nominations is late June. Nominations may be made online (www.nytco.com/pressroom) or by e-mail (libraryawards@NYTimes.com).
