The Life Digital? One in Four Adults Didn’t Read a Book Last Year
August 24, 2007

An Associated Press Poll conducted in August 2007 by Ipsos Public Affairs reveals that 27% of American adults say they didn’t read a single book last year. The poll surveyed 1,003 adults (771 of whom were registered voters), and had a sampling error margin of +/- 3%.

Top reads reported by respondents included the Bible (or other religious text), popular fiction, non-fiction history books, biographies, mysteries and thrillers, and romance novels. The survey summary at the link above gives demographic information (age, gender, race, religious and political affiliations) of respondents, although it doesn’t give any data on what respondents were doing instead of reading books. Something I found particularly interesting was that neither the poll nor respondents made any mention of electronic or audio books – and I wonder if including questions about them in the survey would have had a significant impact on the results?

More as it happens,

Cheryl
