Bring Out Your Hidden Collections
April 15, 2008
The library world has been talking about “Hidden Collections” for years, with high profile attention being paid them in 2003 through ARL’s Exposing Hidden Collections conference, and with revivified attention coming after last month’s announcement from the Mellon Foundation that it “has awarded the Council on Library and Information Resources (CLIR) $4.27 million to create a national program to identify and catalog hidden special collections and archives.”
I’ll be very interested to see what comes out of the national competition for these funds, but I’m also interested in hearing about other “hidden collections” projects – such as the Hidden Collections search at Northwestern University Library. A colleague and I were recently working on a research guide and presentation featuring some of our “hidden collections” in Middle Eastern Studies, and we referred to the Northwestern site for ideas and inspiration – it was very helpful.
So if your library has anything like Northwestern’s “Hidden Collections Search,” I (and I suspect many other colleagues) would like to know about it – please do post a URL so we can take a look.
More as it happens,
Cheryl
