The Twelve YouTube Library Videos of (Pick the Holiday of Your Choice)
December 22, 2007
Harking back to my 11/25/07 post, “The True Use of Compact Shelving and the Secret Librarian Handshake,” I decided to do some further YouTube investigation to see just how libraries and librarians are being depicted, video-wise. So here’s my short list of must-see YouTube library-related videos:
Conan the Librarian (41 seconds from Weird Al Yankovic’s movie, UHF);
Gorilla Librarian (3 minutes of pure Monty Python joy);
Librarian Lays Down the Law (1 minute, 27 seconds of Parker Posey expressing what may have gone on in many of our heads… but never made it into the atmosphere before);
Library Dominoes (22 seconds; I’m completely appalled – of course – and fascinated by this one – how’d they set it up?);
Library Fines (2 minutes, 54 seconds; we’re “dangerous people” here, just as we’ve always known);
Interval Library (2 minutes, 33 seconds; tell the truth – haven’t YOU always wanted to try this with compact shelving?);
Library Cheer (1 minute, 6 seconds; mere words cannot adequately describe this one; you must experience it for yourself);
Library Limbo (2 minutes, 54 seconds; a delightful 1920’s-style animated film from a Cornell University film course);
Marian the Librarian (7 minutes, 42 seconds; the song and performance from Robert Preston that really DID make me want to become a librarian – I thought it was all about musical comedy…);
Rock ‘n’ Roll Library (4 minutes, 51 seconds; rumor has it this is the way Jimi Hendrix got his start);
Seneca Library Holiday Song (4 minutes, 50 seconds; those of us who’ve been missing "The Man with the Velvet Voice," the "The Sultan of Smooth Soul" – that’s right, Mr. Barry White – since his untimely death in 2003 can enjoy a sort-of flashback with this video, which is otherwise hilarious but actually features a good singer. I’m a fan!);
Your Life Work: The Librarian (10 minutes, 13 seconds; a government career film from 1946 – I’d really like to know how many people this film convinced to enter the profession).
More as it’s filmed and loaded into the ether,
Cheryl
