Blogging the Sleep Study

October 29, 2009
So last night I had my second sleep study done, and it was much more comfortable and easier than the first, done 10 years ago. I have sleep apnea and, based on the results of that first sleep study, have used a CPAP ever since -- for apnea-sufferers, it is truly life transforming.

There are so many sleep health centers in the area now that I was able to go to one just 15 minutes from my house. It was quite a fascinating experience: I got wired up with electrodes all over the place (including the top of my head), also got hooked up to an oxygen monitor, and slept in what amounted to a very nice hotel room with TV -- regular and closed circuit, so the technician could observe my sleep throughout the night. Mine was a split study, meaning that for 1/2 the night I would try to sleep without the CPAP, and then, if I had sufficient apnea occurrences, they would put me on a CPAP. Around 2 AM when the technician came in to hook me up to the CPAP, she said it was painful to watch me try to sleep without it. I assured her I am devoted to my CPAP machine, and never leave home without it.

Since that first sleep study 10 years ago, I've told many friends and relatives about the CPAP and how it's made my life so much better. The number of people who suffer from apnea is high, and if you think you or someone you know may have it, you might want to check out some of these sites:

What is Sleep Apnea?  from the National Heart Lung and Blood Institute

Sleep Apnea, from the Sleep Apnea Health Center at WebMD

Positive Airway Pressure, at Wikipedia.

Insurance often covers the study and the CPAP machine, so I strongly urge you to check into this if you think you might have apnea -- or at least touch base with your doctor.

More as it happens, after a good night's sleep,
Cheryl

I suspected I had sleep apnea for a long time before I got tested, but it was finding out that people who have it have heart attacks in their sleep and die finally made me face it. You are SO right--life is amazingly better with a CPAP!

I'm quite thin and had the impression that sleep apnea was for fat old men who snored. Imagine my surprise when I did a sleep study and was diagnosed with sleep apnea! I've been on my CPAP machine for about 2 weeks now- what I notice the most is that I'm dreaming again and I don't wake up several times a night. I have lots of hours and dreams to catch up on, but I'm glad that I'm on my way. Sleep deprivation is a killer- literally!

Thank you for getting the word out! It took some time for me to get used to using my CPAP, but now it's as natural to me as -- sleeping. More people need to be aware of just how much damage sleep apnea can do.

I really resisted doing a sleep study for years. I finally did one, and got a good night's sleep for the first time in longer than I can remember. To anybody who's holding out -- you should do this if you have any suspicion you might have apnea. it's worth it.

I agree: the sleep study is a bit annoying and the CPAP can take some getting used to but it is well-worth it!
