Getting It Off My Chest: Doing More with Less is Truly An Oxymoronic Phrase

October 30, 2009 If I see one more instance of someone using the phrase, “doing more with less” about libraries whose budgets have been drastically cut, I think I’m going to vomit. I know my blood pressure soars and I’m afraid my head is going to explode whenever I see it. I find it insulting in the extreme to be told that, despite an unprecedented (since the 1930’s) economic downturn (aka, “depression”), we in libraries can merrily just do more, with so much less.

Let’s just buckle down, put our noses to the grindstone, pitch in, work smarter, join forces, and reconcile ourselves to the notion that for some time to come, libraries are going to have to do LESS with less. The halcyon days of plenty are gone (if ever libraries actually enjoyed them) and lean times are going to be with us for awhile yet. That, I can deal with.  And I can “reduce, reuse, and recycle”' just fine, too -- but please don’t ask me to, in effect, make something out of nothing. It’s offensive.

Thanks for letting me vent, and more, or less, as it happens,
Cheryl

Here, here! About time more people started turning this saying on its ear.

Thank you for finally saying it. Too often the idea is that "we'll just get it in digital format and save all that space." The problem is that there is never enough budgeted for the electronic formats and the access issues. So while weeding means there are less items in the budget and we buy less, the bottom line is that there is LESS. You cannot get more from less. That old bigger bang for your buck. Eventually, that tops out as well. And you can't do anything with ZERO!!

Right on, Cheryl! I am so disgusted by the hypocrisy of administrators who task us with doing more with less, as if they ever would or could. Thanks for telling it like it is!

A meaningless phrase invented by cretins who don't understand the laws of physics.
