The ABC-CLIO/EBSCO Publishing Partnership: History in the Making
June 22, 2007
By now you may have heard about the new partnership between ABC-CLIO and EBSCO, but just in case you haven’t, or in case you’d like a quick synopsis of the details, here are the facts as I understand them:
EBSCO has acquired (as in, now owns) America: History and Life and Historical Abstracts. They bought them from ABC-CLIO this month (June 2007). There will not be any interruption in coverage; the two databases will remain on the ABC-CLIO search platform through the end of June 2008 but they will also be made searchable via EBSCOhost by January 2008. The current editorial teams for the databases will “remain intact,” and EBSCO is planning to create full-text versions of both databases with unique content. These will be offered as optional upgrades, and will be available for an additional fee to libraries that want them. The full-text versions are expected to be available in 2008 at the very earliest.
EBSCO did not acquire ABC-CLIO, but in addition to the transfer in ownership of the two major historical indexing databases, the companies have an agreement in place for a new distribution partnership to make the following ABC-CLIO databases available through EBSCO Publishing: American Government, American History, Issues: Understanding Controversy and Society, State Geography, the United States at War: Understanding Conflict and Society, World Geography: Understanding a Changing World, World History: Ancient and Medieval Eras, World History: The Modern Era, and the eBook collection, History Reference Online.
ABC-CLIO and EBSCO are working together to expand the history resources available through the databases. In response to my question asking for details (“Will ABC-CLIO be helping to create the full-text versions? And will there be other kinds of materials in the "expanded" history resources available through the databases?”) I got the answer, “stay tuned!” Apparently work has just begun on figuring out what kinds of enhancements can be offered and I’ve been promised the details as soon as a plan is completed. So readers, please, “stay tuned!”
More as it happens,
Cheryl
