AASL's Best Websites for Teaching and Learning

July 17, 2009 One of the most exciting revelations at ALA last week was the Sunday panel that unveiled the inaugural AASL's Best Websites for Teaching and Learning.  (If there was a Newbery kinda ceremony for the techie in many of us, this was it!)

The Best Websites for Teaching and Learning honors websites, tools, and resources of exceptional value to inquiry-based teaching and learning as embodied in the American Association of School Librarians' Standards for the 21st-Century Learner.
"Top 25" Web sites foster the qualities of innovation, creativity, active participation, and collaboration. They are free, Web-based sites that are user friendly and encourage a community of learners to explore and discover.
Led by Taskforce Chair, Pam Berger, the panel introduced, demonstrated, and shared each tool with a tip for its use in education.

The 25 Best Websites were divided into following categories:

Organizing and Managing

Content Collaboration

Curriculum Sharing Media Sharing

Virtual Environments

Social Networking and Communication

In addition to the 25 Best, Pam and her team also revealed the Landmark Websites for Teaching and Learning, honored for
their exemplary histories of authoritative, dynamic content and curricular relevance. They are free, web-based sites that are user friendly and encourage a community of learners to explore and discover and provide a foundation to support 21st-century teaching and learning.
The site features additional materials:
Consider this wonderful list of 2.0 tools as a guide for creating inservices for teachers and librarians.
Consider using this list, with its national organization endorsement, as a rationale for use of these valuable tools in your buildings and districts.

What we worry about, of course, is how many of these wonderful resources are blocked in our schools. My hope is that the AASL blessing may help nudge that elephant out of the room...

Exactly what Frances said. Would love to use more of these, but I can't get to them from school. But maybe this honor will help sway others.
