italki: language learning 2.0
May 6, 2008

In the spirit of the open source movement and wonderful world of Web 2.0, comes italki a social networking portal for language learning. The site currently boasts more than 200,000 members and addresses the needs of learners of a wide variety of languages.

On italki, you can find a language partner; join groups; ask questions of the community in italki's Answers area; grab, share, and contribute knowledge in a variety of wikis on various languages and levels. In Files, a Spanish language learner, for instance, will find a Spanish (PDF textbook),Spanish Verb Table or a chart of Spanish Idiomatic Expressions.

The site is rich with free textbooks, learning guides, charts, videos, pictures, sound and text.

Though I probably won't let my K12ers loose on this social networking platform just yet, I will send my teachers--both World Language and ESL/ELL--there for resources and connections.  The potential is very cool!
