Review of the Day: Iggy Peck, Architect (Part Two)
November 27, 2007

(CONTINUED FROM PART ONE)

Smell Note: No one on the face of this planet cares about this aside from me, but I felt that it needed to be said.  There are some children’s books that due to binding glue, paper quality or what have you, have an odd smell about them.  Have you ever noticed this?  As a kid I was not fond of those books that would open, only to allow an odd decomposing glue scent to smack me upside the head.  “Iggy”, to my chagrin, has a similar odor of its own.  It may only be my own copy (which has been sitting in my sweater drawer until I can give it to my little niece for her birthday or Christmas), but I thought obligated in mention it in any case.

Blog Reviews: Book Buds and 4IQREAD

Internet Reviews:  Reader Views and Armchair Interviews

Misc:

  • See sample pages from the book here.
  • Author Andrea Beaty also just happens to be one of the Three Silly Chicks, a fellow children's literary blog.  Please be so good as to check it out.
  • Plus, how many authors get invitations to go to Legoland?  Wowzer.

The "Notes on the Cover" feature has a new partner, "Smell Note." I like it. I like it.

Smell Note would have come in useful when I reviewed the book When You Were Small. That book's publisher spent extra money so that the binding smelled good.

"No one on the face of this planet cares about this aside from me...." So wrong! I smell every book I read, several times in one sitting. I think it goes back to the small, old library my mother used to take me to when I was little. It had that "old books and one window unit" smell, and I love it. Love it still. Not many books smell as good as that these days. So...you're not alone! Smell away!

I thought I was the only one who noticed or cared about book smell. When I am choosing a book to read, I sometimes find myself cracking them open and holding them to my nose absentmindedly, like I'm selecting a spice for my soup. And thanks for calling our podcast "special". That comment from you might trump even the best kids book smell!

Oh, I'm so with you on the book smell. Some of them smell awful. There's a faint vomit odor to them. Gross.
