They Scream To Me In My Sleep
August 20, 2007

So sleepy.  Attended a wedding shower/bachlorette party two nights ago and I still haven't recovered.  Reviews will have to wait a for a while as I recoup.  A pity too.  A recent Bookmoot post about the titles she has read but not yet reviewed got me to thinking. I've some books that need to be reviewed. Truth be told I have a whole friggin' shelf of them. So which one should I review next? I leave it up to you, gentle viewers, to tell me the order in which my fiction should be done, always bearing in mind that I am only showing you the chapter books, and not the picture books, I have read.

Here's what I have:

The Professor's Daughter by Joann Sfar, illustrated by Emmanuel Guibert
The Misadventures of Bartholomew Piff: You Wish by Jason Lethcoe
Stoneheart by Charlie Fletcher
Attack of the Turtle by Drew Carlson, illustrated by David Johnson
Dawn and Dusk by Alice Mead
The Thing About Georgie by Lisa Graff
Feathers by Jacqueline Woodson
A Crooked Kind of Perfect by Linda Urban
The Secret History of Tom Trueheart by Ian Beck
Revolution is not a Dinner Party by Ying Chang Compestine
The Book of Lies by James Moloney
Elissa's Quest by Erica Verrillo
Beyond the Spiderwick Chronicles: The Nixie's Song by Tony DiTerlizzi and Holly Black
Middle School is Worse Than Meatloaf by Jennifer Holm
Samuel Blink and the Forbidden Forest by Matt Haig
Leepike Ridge by N.D. Wilson
Emmy and the Incredible Shrinking Rat by Lynne Jonnell
The Year of the Rat by Grace Lin

Help me to decide!  What needs a review the most?

My vote is for Feathers. I know you've said you don't know quite what to think about it, but since it's been named as a possibility for the Newbery, I'm curious about it.

Some of the children's librarians of NYPL might start a bookgroup to just discuss titles. If so, the first one we'll be talking about will be "Feathers". Once I've heard a variety of opinions, maybe that'll solidify my own. "A Crooked Kind of Perfect" was marvelous wasn't it? What an apt title.

I'm in the midst of doing an interview with Linda Urban, who wrote A Crooked Kind of Perfect, so I'm partial to that title at the moment. I'd also love to hear your thoughts on The Professor's Daughter, which I reviewed at Writing and Ruminating not long ago, and I'd like to hear more about Year of the Rat, since I so enjoyed Lin's Year of the Dog.

Oh, please do review Middle School is Worse Than Meatloaf by Jennifer Holm. I just love the title and can't wait to read it myself. (besides -- two time Newbery honor author!) and -- oh no, do you only review fiction? I just asked my publisher to send you my latest nonfiction. darn. -wendieOld

Ah. You caught me out. I definitely review non-fiction as well. I've just been lazy and haven't done any lately. Good call. I'll have to up my non-fiction titles from here on in.
