Great Post about RSS

July 26, 2008 http://hloy.edublogs.org/2008/07/25/all-together-now-thing-2/

I try not to stress over reading all of the posts and will quite frequently mark all as read. I figure that the folks I make a point of reading are reading the same ones as me and they’ll write or share anything important! Both professionally and personally, I’ve found RSS to be a great way to keep up with all of my interests. Of course, it can be a great time saver AND a great time waster.
Balance is important as Heather points out. I've reduced ther number of feeds I rad over time. It's very easy to go crazy when you first get the reader and subscribe to loads of different blogs, news, etc. Look for voices and topics that speak to you. And don't feel badly about NOT reading every single post.

I use Firefox as my browser and I really like the way I can set up my RSS feeds there as live bookmarks. Just clicking on the orange icon adds the feed URL to my Bookmarks Toolbar folder. They display in a row across the top of my browser screen and wafting the cursor across them drops down a list of recent headlines. No accounts, no having to remember to go somewhere to look at posts. They just sit there in front of my all day - so easy!

Heather is so right about balance - we cannot possibly read all the wonderful ideas that librarians and school library media specialists are writing! There are times when we have to decide to "mark all as read" and move on.
