A Breather! And a Question.

August 14, 2008 Readingandrunning writes:

I have spent many hours over the last couple weeks exploring the latest ‘things’. At this point I feel that I may be getting overwhelmed with all the different applications that are available to me. My goal when I joined the learning experience was to become familiar enough to present some ideas to my teachers so they could begin including one of two things into their lessons with their students. But my question now is what one do I start with? With the time constraints that we all work under I have a short opportunity to make my case and I want it to be a good one.

What a great question! I think it will be different for many of you - what would you start with?

I would probably start with a blog - because you automatically get an RSS feed and can add all of the other things to it: images, video, etc.

Readingandrunning also notes she's feeling a little overwhelmed -- and maybe others are too. I'm a little overwhelmed myself - I rport back to campus next Wednesday! So what I thought we'd is take the rest of this week as a cach up time. Thing #8 will go up Monday.

If you haven't had time to devote to the Things, it's cool. Catch up now where you left off or just pick and choose the ones you'd like to focus on. Use the community blog for help and questions or to share tips. Try making something cool with a Flickr toy or explore the Web 2.0 articles/video.

And don't miss clicking through to see Readingandrunning's very own Trading Card!

Kathy Ishizuka, Technology Editor, SLJ commented:

I'm with you, Readingandrunning. And nice blog. I often feel overwhelmed in trying to keep up with new technologies, and it's my job!
Given that some of the social stuff, like Twitter and wikis, involves a bigger concept that might make these tools a harder sell at first (though it's important for you to get your head around social networking/collaboration, I think) I'd suggest going with something more tangible: a class video, let's say, or a VoiceThread presentation.
Demonstrating a few successes with small projects might help ease the way for future collaboration.
For some on-the-ground ideas on implementing these tools, I'd recommend visiting two social networks: Classroom 2.0 www.classroom20.com
and TeacherLibrarianNetwork teacherlibrarian.ning.com.
Consider posting there, too. These communities are very good about responding with advice and encouragement.
Good luck.

I almost think that podcasting is easier to start with. If you could get say 4 teachers to agree to let their students record some of their research on one of their projects, you could put a podcast up every other month and not feel too stressed out. You don't even have to have the podcast have an RSS feed, you could just ask your tech person to host the file for download on your school website. (Some say this isn't a real podcast though...) A blog is going to require some regular maintenance; podcasts could be put out as far between as a couple of times a semester.

Thanks for all the suggestions, I really appreciate it. I have some experience with a few of the Things, last year I had 6th graders create wiki's based on their human body systems research and we had a couple of students create podcasts of stories that they wrote. If anyone has used wikis with students I would like to share some thoughts on it's use as a collaboration tool. Thanks for all the support and exposure to 'what's out there'.
