Trying to get the attention of your school administrator? "Be naughty." "Think strategically," suggests Ross Todd, director of research at the Center for International Scholarship in School Libraries (CISSL) and AASL presenter.
Start by sharing the evidence that school libraries and library media specialists have a measurable impact on student achievement. You’ll find it summarized in School Libraries Work! (Scholastic, Updated 2006 Edition now available). Follow up by sharing what you are doing in the library – post collaborations on your Web site and submit quarterly reports that focus on learning outcomes, not circulation statistics. And always, implores Todd, "report on the library as a quality learning environment." Mischievous? Maybe, but mighty smart, too. --Daryl Grabarek
