Librarians, they need your help to rescue Tango!!!
September 29, 2008

In the midst of all of this political and economic upheaval, we need to remember there are still people - librarians and teachers - who need our help. Hence, any librarians out there reading this, please help a reader-friend of mine with the following - disturbing issue:

jillyean kellogg commented: where can we go for support when parents attempt to have this book removed from our school library. we are facing this right now and must defend the book at an upcoming district meeting. Help! We love this book and NEED it in our library.

First of all, who would not want this delightful book in his library? Makes no sense.

So my response, limited as it may be...

Hi Jillyean, I will pass your message along to SLJ staffers who may be able to guide you in the right direction. Send me an email. amy.bowllan at reedbusiness.com.

What should Jillyean do?

Go into the meeting armed with some facts - good review of the book, how mnay times it has been circulated (although that might be a misleading number if kids checked the book out for their parents to take a look at it because of this challenge), maybe, if you can find it, articled where the book has been challenged other places and was kept in the library. Always refer to your selection policy (I assume this school/district has one) and why you chose this book and what place it has in your collection. Also try and get some parents/community memebers on your side! Good luck!

I've read "And Tango Makes Three" and it is a delightful book. How sad that in 2008, great literature and ideas can still be met with fear and censorship. NPR is running a series of reports on censored books this week. From the intro to the series: "Sept. 29 marks the beginning of the American Library Association's annual "Banned Books Week," a commemoration of all the books that have ever been removed from library shelves and classrooms." Well worth checking out at npr dot org.

Thanks for the update, Joyce, on NPR. I am on my way to check it out. Also, Jillyean has contacted me via email and I am hoping to have a plan in place.
