Cash backNovember 14, 2005Movie adaptations of books abound right now. Opening this Friday, Walk the Line—which re-creates the romance of country music legends Johnny Cash (Joaquin Phoenix) and June Carter Cash (Reese Witherspoon)—draws on Johnny's own Man in Black: His Own Story in His Own Words (1975, o.p.), Cash: The Autobiography (1997), and director James Mangold's interviews with the couple until their deaths in 2003. The music, apparently, takes a back seat to the evolution of their complex relationship, a risky but exciting angle in this editor's take. What does this have to do with books? Johnny's own works aside, the literature on these larger-than-life soul mates leaves a lot to be desired. The LJ review vault turns up valuable but hardly definitive chronicles like Cash by the editors of Rolling Stone, Bill Miller's Cash: An American Man, Ring of Fire: The Johnny Cash Reader edited by Michael Streisguth, and Streisguth's Johnny Cash at Folsom Prison: The Making of an American Masterpiece. June herself wrote two memoirs, long out of print, but hasn't proven a draw with music scribes (though her son, John Carter Cash, has written an authorized biography, Wildwood Fire, to be published next September by the W. Publishing Group). To the point, why doesn't someone out there pen a dual biography?
