Bad Casting, or Tony Soprano as Hemingway
April 8, 2008
Writers, even famous ones, almost never have films made about them, although they have been the focus of several plays. Got a good laugh out of the news that James Gandolfini, a guy I’ve always liked (although I’ve never seen The Sopranos), has been cast—or miscast—as Hemingway in a film he’s also producing with Philip Kaufman directing. For me,
it’s a bit of a stretch. But hey, who knows, maybe with the right make up (and another face)…. I mean who would have guessed that Anthony Hopkins could nail down Nixon, right?
So who are the great performances by actors as writers? Here are my favs:
Joseph Fiennes as Will in Shakespeare in Love
Christopher Plummer as Kipling in The Man Who Would Be King
Frederick Forrest as Dashiell Hammett in Hammett (seconded by Jason Robards as Hammett in Julia)
John Mahoney as a very thinly disguised William Faulkner in Barton Fink
Philip Seymour Hoffman and Catherine Keener as Truman Capote and Harper Lee in Capote
Come one, help me out here, there must be others.
