Lennon's alive, man; we're dead

Every year on the anniversary of John Lennon's death (25 years today, folks), I tend to visualize the man in his mid-1970s New York phase, all street-walking swagger in denim, motorcycle boots, and page boy cap. This era comes rushing back thanks to my favorite rock photographer, Bob Gruen, in his recent John Lennon: The New York Years (Stewart, Tabori & Chang), a stellar collection of 150 color and black-and-white photos that zoom in on "Lennon as a father and husband, rather than as a groundbreaking and controversial musician," to quote LJ's reviewer. Reading the first part of Bob Spitz's delightful The Beatles, on the other hand, brought to mind the picture of the exuberant rockabilly Beatle, captured in Jürgen Vollmer: The Beatles in Hamburg (Schirmer/Mosel) and, of course, by the photographer who would give the Fab Four their career-changing haircuts, Astrid Kerchherr. (Unfortunately, her anthologies of Beatles images have been published only in the U.K.) Bottom line: however you dress Lennon, he's compelling as hell. Hi Heather, Please read Larry Kane's Lennon Revealed. Kane has been a Philadelphia newscaster for more than 40 years. He was also the only reporter to accompany the Beatles on their whirlwind North American Tours of 1964 and 1965. He remained a friend of Lennon's until his death. Kane shares his personal experiences and those of others who knew Lennon. Best, Karl Helicher
