Surface Computing
April 7, 2008

To follow up on my column this month about surface computing, here are a couple of new developments.

- The MacBook Air (that really thin thing with my drool all over it) has a multi-touch trackpad; the technology has also spread to the new MacBook Pro laptops. Multi-touch, the ability for a touch surface to recognize multiple points of input to allow additional tactile commands, is the power behind the iPhone and iPod Touch. The two finger pinch and spread to zoom and other commands are now available on laptops. Without all of the other coolness that makes up surface computing, the rise of multi-touch inputs for laptops has some great potential for making the interactions more real.

- It looks like the first consumer focused use of surface computing in the real world will be AT&T Wireless stores.
