Need a Photo? Yotophoto!
August 29, 2007
If you are looking for a stock photograph with a free (as in no cost) license that allows a variety of uses, start your search at
Yotophoto. The Yotophoto site provides a meta search engine that checks for photos matching your keyword search from a variety of sources including
Flickr,
Wikipedia,
Stock.Xchng, and
Morguefile. This search is specifically looking for images that fall under a form of
Copyleft - a broad term used to describe more open licensing terms such as
Creative Commons or the
GNU Public License (GPL) as well as works released into the
public domain.
Though all of the results from Yotophoto should be okay for use, you will still need to be sure and check individual usage terms for different photos from each site. For example, some photographers who post to Morguefile request that you e-mail them to let them know how/where their images are being used. Additionally, works that include Creative Commons or GPL licensed items may have to be freely re-released under the same licensing structure to validate the use. Sure, this takes a bit of extra work...but
TANSTAAFL. Do you want to pay for your images with time or with money?
