How to Remix (Part 2)
April 15, 2008

Intrigued by idea of expressing your creativity through remixing but not sure how to get started? Here are some quick ideas for bringing remixing to your library.
  • Low-Tech Remixing: Don't be afraid to start small...and offline. Remxing is a concept, not a technology. Get students into a remix mood by thinking about the combination or two pieces or types of media. Create a soundtrack for a favorite novel with a listing of songs that set or match the mood of the story. Consider what books, movies, or music a character from a book would have on their bedroom shelves. Design a movie poster for a book.
  • Getting Technical Remix: Take a famous speech from history and set it to music. Create a movie trailer for a book or series as a way to encourage reading. Turn a Shakespearean sonnet into a song.

  • The YouTube Remix: YouTube has signed deals with most of the major record labels that allow users to remix music videos. Warner, Universal and Sony BMG allow some of their music to appear in user-generated content on the video site. Students can record a new video for songs and legally post it.
