ieSpell
April 30, 2007

Sometimes you just have to use Internet Explorer. Sometimes you just have to spell things correctly. When those two instances collide, you had better turn to the ieSpell extension for IE7. Unlike Firefox and Mac OSX which both offer integrated spellchecking, IE7 has left users to flounder in the sea of misspelled words. Or is that the cee of mispelled werds? Either way, there is a constant battle between the desire to get things done and the hassle of having to copy and paste blog posts into another application for spellchecking.

While not perfect, it doesn't offer inline spellchecking for instance, the ieSpell extension for IE7 does add a handy button to the toolbar as well as a right-click menu option to spell check the contents of any website form. So if you absolutely have to use Internet Explorer and can use IE7, this is certainly a tool worth trying. As libraries begin using blogs and wikis for projects, it is critical that we are modeling proper writing in an online environment to avoid critics who equate electronic writing with txt-ing. And, use of this extension means there is no excuse for student blog posts with inkoecttly pelled wards.

EDIT: As the commenter below notes, ieSpell seems to have disappeared (at least for now). I have removed the links so as not to feed the ad site, but will keep checking back. Chris-5/2

Has ieSpell been discontinued? I went there yesterday and the site was fine, but today it's just a bunch of Ad links.

Thanks for the heads up, Tony. It does seem to have gone away somehow. Alas, I didn't get it installed on all of my windows boxes.
