Vista - Do Not Want!
July 20, 2007
It's an
lolcats thing - another one of those crazy Internet cliches - but I cannot think of a more clear way to describe my reaction to Windows Vista. After attending a training today, the only conclusion I can reach is that schools are in a heap of computer trouble.
The minimum requirements (in the software world this translates to a deep belly laugh) to run Windows Vista are
1GB of RAM and a 128MB graphics card. This will let the computer boot, but don't expect to go blazing through your work. Also, don't expect to see any of the fancy eye-candy that make up the new Aero interface. To access the new coolness effeciently, you are going to have to have a much bigger graphics card and about twice as much RAM. In otherwords, upgrading to Vista will probably require a complete hardware overhaul for most schools.
I hope that as schools are struggling with an upgrade plan, they are also remembering that Microsoft Windows isn't the only game in town.
Edubuntu, for example, is an excellent Linux distribution that has been optimized for the K-12 environment.
Apple is also coming on strong with a great OS that keeps getting better and hardware price points that really give PCs a challenge. Please remember that there are other choices out there...
