A Wiki Kids Will Love - PikiWiki
September 21, 2007

Sure, wikis are cool, and they can be a great addition to your library toolbox. But do your students enjoy using them? Something tells me they will love PikiWiki! Part wiki and part social network, PikiWiki lets users quickly and easily create media rich pages that include pictures, audio and even video along with text. If you are using Internet Explorer...I'm sorry. Windows and IE users do gain some added features on PikiWiki, however, including the ability to drag and drop pictures from a folder right onto the page.

The line between applications and web applications keeps getting fuzzier and fuzzier! In the case of PikiWiki, the only indication that you are using an online application is that it will stop working if you unplug the network cable to turn off your wireless. Otherwise, you drag-and-drop items on the "page" and generally edit as you would in any desktop application.

To help provide some management of networks and sharing, PikiWiki does allow users to create and manage groups and scrapbooks to control access.

Be warned, this site is in alpha! That means you can go check it out, but there is a good chance it will be up and down and things might not always work. Still, it is a big jump forward, and worth a look.
