Cricital Clicks: Library Podcasting
April 2, 2007

A podcast is really just an audio blog. Instead of reading a blog story, you listen to a podcast episode. Like blogs, you can subscribe to podcast feeds to receive any new updates. There are a variety of library and library related podcasts available online.

While podcasts make for interesting listening, they are also very easy to create. How could you use podcasting in your library? The Livona Jr. High School library in Livonia, NY publishes an occasional book club podcast. The most recent episode covers their reading of Carl Hiaasen's Hoot. Podcasts have a very low technology treshold. To record audio on a Windows computer, you can use Audacity and a microphone. On a Mac, you can use GarageBand. There are many tutorials available online to help you get started with either Audacity or GarageBand.

At the Runkle School in Brookline, MA we are podcasting book reviews. Students K-8 are writing book review scripts, recording them and posting them to the internet. We are creating an audio database that students can use when they are looking for a book to read. So far first, second, seventh, and eighth grade students have posted their reviews. We are making our way through the school. I have worked closely with our school librarian on this project and it has been a lot of fun for both students and teachers, who are also contributing their reviews. We welcome book review podcasts from teachers and students around the world. I have also posted some podcasting resources: templates for students to use when writing their reviews, directions on how to use GarageBand - in both video and written form, and lots of podcasting links.
